Vic Government Transport budget released

May 10th 2010

The 2010-11 State Budget, released on May 4, allocated $6.2 billion for better roads and public transport, including new trams, more stations and road projects. Two key Victorian Transport Plan projects were funded under this budget: Regional Rail Link and Peninsula Link.

Significant transport items in the budget include:

  • 50 new trams and setting up a new tram maintenance and storage depot at Preston
  • Upgrade of regional roads, including continuing the Geelong Ring Road project
  • Four new train stations in growth areas: Cardinia Road, Caroline Springs, Lynbrook, Williams Landing
  • Upgrade of key routes in Melbourne's outer suburbs
  • 20 train stations in Melbourne to be upgraded to premium status, including 100 staff
  • Installation of noise walls along the Monash Freeway
  • Construction of the Peninsula Link project
  • Upgrade of Clyde Road and Princes Highway East between Traralgon and Sale.
  • Funding of Regional Rail Link, the biggest addition to the rail network since the City Loop.

Congratulations to the LAAP grant recipients

Announced by Minister Pallas on Thurs 5 Nov, ten councils across Victoria will share in a $2 million fund to improve access to walking, cycling and public transport through the state government's TravelSmart and Local Area Access Program (LAAP).  These grant programs are designed to assist local governments in implementing projects that encourage residents to think twice before using their car.  One project recipient, the Murrindindi Shire Council, will see an investment in shared paths in Kinglake and Flowerdale, providing vital bushfire recovery support.  For more information, visit the grant page on the DOT website.

Taxi Rank Safety Program - open for business

November 5th 2009

The Taxi Rank Safety Program is now open and councils across Victoria are invited to submit funding applications for initiatives such as funding to install CCTV systems, expand the number of taxi spaces, or build shelters or seating for passengers.

To be eligible for funding, councils will need to demonstrate to the Victorian Taxi Directorate that the proposed project:

  • Will improve the safety and facilities for taxi passengers and drivers at a taxi rank;
  • Has the support from the local community, businesses and taxi companies; and
  • Represents value for money.

National Bike Path Projects announced

October 23rd 2009

Congratulations to the local governments who were successful in receiving federal funding via the Jobs Fund for their projects that will see more bike paths, bike lanes and bicycle parking facilities pop up across the State, while also supporting job creation.  The funded projects are available for download via the attached document.  For more information, visit the Jobs Fund website.

State Budget to provide funding to improve taxi rank safety

Announced on Mon 27 April 2009, the $4 million Taxi Rank Safety Program initiative will enable local governments to apply for funding to improve nominated taxi ranks to deliver improved safety for passengers.  The program will run over 4 years and will fund infrastructure including:
•    Closed circuit television;
•    Improved lighting;
•    Pedestrian barriers;
•    Weather shelters;
•    Signage;
•    Seats and
•    Road treatments.
