1. Connecting transport modes
Prioritising bus access to railway station entry and exit points will make it easier for people to use public transport and helps to build patronage.
At the Glenroy Transport Interchange, three bus stops in priority position close to station entrance with shelters and safe access helps improve connectivity.
Pedestrian crossing at grade following lines of natural movement. This provides good access to the car park and also acts as speed hump to calm traffic movements.
An area for improvement - limited and rudimentary bus route and timetable information.
While in Bendigo, bus bays at train station entrance, help with the ease of transition between transport modes.
Footscray - cars can drive and park at the main station building...
...but it is a good walk to the bus stop.
The new bus interchange in Sunshine is well connected to both the Sunshine Railway Station and the busy shopping centre.
High density living in the Docklands close to city with excellent tram services…
…and bike paths.
2. Linking public transport with shopping centres
Generate more bus trips and reduce parking pressure by making the bus trip more attractive. Well located bus stops close to entrances with shelter and signage will attract more passengers and the potential for more shoppers!
Highpoint - well located bus stop with shelter and signs.
Watergardens Shopping Centre, Sydenham, cars have access to the main entrance...
…bus stops are located at the side.
Knox City - combined bus stops and taxi rank close to the main entrance.
Epping Plaza - well designed pedestrian access to centre from car park.
...though minimal facilities for bus passengers near loading dock.
Waverley Gardens - priority given to bus access near main entrance. Comfortable seats, shelter and signage.
Chadstone - well located bus stops with many bus services from this site...
...but no services on Sunday...what are the shoppers to do on one of the busiest trading days!
The Melton railway station is located some kilometres from the main shopping centre.
To connect to any activity requires a bus trip.
The result: The shopping centre is car dominated; an area for improvement!
Sunbury shopping centre is built around the railway station and bus interchange. Public transport is well integrated into the shopping centre maximising trips by train and bus.
It works! The bus interchange is very busy.
3. Making the bus stops more comfortable and welcoming
A bus signage project in the cities of Moreland and Darebin to make bus routes more legible to the travelling public. Good signage and a colour theme adopted to reinforce the 'mental map' and connectivity of the bus route.
Waiting for the bus won't seem so bad with shelter, seating, information and good paving connections to the footpath.
Motivated to take the bus? An clear area of improvement.
