This presentation explores the concept of 'Self explained roads' which it defines as:

  • The look and feel of a road matches its intended function
  • Evokes correct expectations and driving behaviours
  • Involve a well planned set of road categories
  • Are safe and ‘user friendly’ for all road users

The presentation and associated research seek to demonstrate and evaluate a 'self explanitory roads' process suitable for New Zealand streets. Australian local governments may find these idea useful in defining their own road planning strategies.
