Detailed information on how Victorians travel, to where, by what method and for what purpose is now available on-line as a result of a detailed study by the Victorian Government.

Department of Transport’s Executive Director of Policy and Communications Michael Hopkins said the Victorian Integrated Survey of Travel and Activity (VISTA), or VISTA 07, gives everyone  access to the sort of information about our transport networks that had previously only been available to governments.  “The VISTA on-line tool is free, simple and accessible and can give everyone an understanding of how people travel – in Victoria or in their local area,” Mr Hopkins said.

VISTA 07 statistics show:

  • Public transport in Melbourne represents 13 percent of all travel by mode.  The highest rate of public transport use occurs at 8am when 22 percent of all motorised trips are on public transport.
  • Probationary drivers have a crash risk three and a half times higher than drivers with a full licence and men are 20% more likely to have a crash than women.
  • Women are the household chauffeur with nearly 20% of their travel involving picking up or delivering someone of something compared to 12.6% of men
  • The highest mode share for public transport travel is for journeys to education.  Overall 26 percent of all education journeys are made on public transport.

VISTA 07 involved a census-style survey based on travel diary information from over 17,000 households across Victoria - 11,000 located in metropolitan Melbourne and a further 1,250 households located in each of Geelong Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and Latrobe.

Every member of surveyed households is asked to fill in a travel diary for one specific day, with every day of the year covered during the course of the survey.  All personal travel outside the home is reported, from regular trips to work right through to a walk around the block with the dog.
