Bruce’s Creek Open Space Corridor - Bannockburn

Program Summary

Printer-friendly version

The Bruce's Creek Open Space Corridor project has developed farmland within a residential development area into a significant landscape corridor with high environmental values.

Works included weed control, erosion control and water sensitive urban design initiatives, including stormwater treatment zones, bio-retention areas and filtration areas. Stage One also includes the vegetation of 24 hectares of open space with 1000 plants per hectare of various species and height to create a landscape typical of remnants along the creek.

The project was funded in-kind by a $106,250 grant through the State Government's Creating Better Places Program.

The project unveils the creek landscape and creates a public space that will now contribute significantly to achieving the objectives of the Creating Better Places Program. It is envisaged that together with general leisure and community use, this space will host a wide variety of activities such as nature walks, bike rides, a walking school bus program and social gatherings.

Bruce's Creek Open Space Corridor is an excellent example for local governments of the effectiveness of community engagement - 100% community awareness sought, with at least 50% actual community involvement in the project. As a result, no protests were lodged and the project was widely considered a success by residents.

Place-making concepts served as a core principal of this development; encouraging the development of a place people want to be in, rather than simply the most efficient transport corridor.

This project was identified through the Bannockburn Urban Design Framework planning process and has been driven in partnership with Council and a range of user groups.

Stage Two of the project has secured funding and is currently under construction, in a project jointly funded by Department of Planning and Community Development and Council under the Creating Better Places Program Round 4.

A presentation of Stage one of the project is attached. For further details on the project, contact the responsible officer on the details below, or see the Golden Plains Shire website.
