Central Activities Districts and Transit Cities

Program Summary

Printer-friendly version

The Central Activities Districts (CADs) program builds on the achievements of the Transit Cities program, and continues to work on the principals outlined in the Melbourne @ 5 Million report.

Through the creation of six urban hubs, it is intended to limit urban sprawl through higher-density local housing and decrease commuter travel through stimulus of local jobs and services. The following locations have been designated as CADs.

Follow the links above for the plans and projects for the development of each CAD, including details of the area, funding allocation, projects planned or underway, and background information.

The Transit Cities program has successfully served as the initial demonstration program for transit oriented development, putting into place long term plans for the revitalisation of 13 key suburbs and regional centres, along with strong local partnerships.

Existing commitments to regional Transit Cities will continue and the Victorian Government will keep working with councils and communities to manage the growth of regional centres.
